In the original sleeping beauty, the lovely princess is put to sleep when she pricks her finger on a spindle. She sleeps for one hundred years when a prince finally arrives, kisses her, and awakens her. They fall in love, marry, and (surprise surprise) live happily ever after. But alas, the original tale is not so sweet (in fact, you have to read this to believe it.) In the original, the young woman is put to sleep because of a prophesy, rather than a curse.

And it isn’t the kiss of a prince which wakes her up: the king seeing her asleep, and rather fancying having a bit, rapes her. After nine months she gives birth to two children (while she is still asleep). One ofthe children sucks her finger which removes the piece of flax which was keeping her asleep. She wakes up to find herself raped and the mother of two kids.

It’s not just the Other Mother (or the Alice’s Red Queen, or Narnia’s White Witch, or Oz’s Wicked Witch) that’s scary. It’s the place she belongs to, in the mirror, through the wardrobe or over the rainbow. They tap into a primal mixture of fear and excitement at the prospect of vanishing into another world and, perhaps, never coming home.”

- If children’s stories aren’t scary, they’re failing their audience | Sam Leith | Books | The Guardian

Matrix producer plans Muhammad biopic | Film | guardian.co.uk

Matrix producer plans Muhammad biopic | Film | guardian.co.uk

On the street: Left Bank, Paris

It’s hard to do the calculation precisely, but for the cost of 40,000 troops over a few years — well, we could just about turn every Afghan into a Ph.D. The hawks respond: It’s naïve to think that you can sprinkle a bit of education on a war-torn society. It’s impossible to build schools now because the Taliban will blow them up. In fact, it’s still quite possible to operate schools in Afghanistan — particularly when there’s a strong “buy-in” from the local community. Greg Mortenson, author of “Three Cups of Tea,” has now built 39 schools in Afghanistan and 92 in Pakistan — and not one has been burned down or closed.”

- Op-Ed Columnist - More Schools, Not Troops - NYTimes.com

"Americans have tended to watch with a remarkable (I think frightening) degree of passivity as crises..."

“Americans have tended to watch with a remarkable (I think frightening) degree of passivity as crises of all sorts have gripped the country and sent millions of lives into tailspins. Where people once might have deluged their elected representatives with complaints, joined unions, resisted mass firings, confronted their employers with serious demands, marched for social justice and created brand new civic organizations to fight for the things they believed in, the tendency now is to assume that there is little or nothing ordinary individuals can do about the conditions that plague them.”

- Op-Ed Columnist - Changing the World - NYTimes.com

"Then Almitra spoke again and said, “And what of Marriage, master?” And he answered..."

““Then Almitra spoke again and said, “And what of Marriage, master?” And he answered saying: You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore. You shall be together when white wings of death scatter your days. Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God. But let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.””

- Khalil Gibran - The Prophet, via The world as I see it blog

Op-Ed Columnist - A Final Verdict on the Presidential Salute -...

Op-Ed Columnist - A Final Verdict on the Presidential Salute - NYTimes.com

I never had to think much of the men and women in our military until a couple years ago, when I started working with multitudes of former military personnel for a work project. While we often had differences of opinion on politics and policy, I did gain a new respect for their dedication, diligence, and the leadership training many of them received. So this article about the salute - it’s interesting. Especially the “do it right or don’t do it at all” kind of attitude about saluting. and yes, it seems President Obama did it quite well.

For Kumail Nanjiani, a Good Time to Be Funny - NYTimes.com

For Kumail Nanjiani, a Good Time to Be Funny - NYTimes.com

(via fuckyeahheroes)
